The General Post Office Building of Lucknow is not merely a Post Office, but it is a witness to the most famous moments of India's freedom movement of revolutionaries
struggle. During the British rule, a building called 'Ring Theater' was situated in between the two important monuments - Kothi Hayat Baksh and Mallika Ahad Palace. This building was used by the Britishers for entertainment. The English dramas were played and movies screened. A board was put at the entrance which read "Dogs and Indians not allowed". The historical Kakori trial happened at this Theater. Pandit Gobind Vallabh Pant, Chandra Bhanu Gupta, Babu Mohan Lal Saxena and Kripa Shankar Hajela fought for the accused viz. Ram Prasad 'Bismil', Thakur Roshan Singh and Ashfaquallah Khan, etc. During the years 1929-1932, this theater was transformed into the present General Post Office. The GPO building is built in the Gothic style. A large beautiful Hall in the centre, houses main post office and a Clock Tower is attached on it. It is situated on the main Vidhan Sabha Road, opposite to Capital Picture Hall and Christ Church on the main Hazratganj crossing. A beautiful triangle shaped lawn with blooming flowers, is a part of the GPO building. The whole building is said to have been constructed with red brick and lime stone. Wonderful thing is that no iron was used in it. It is one of the best engineering and architecture of early days. A stone embedded on the main gate of the GPO dates the buildings as 1929-1932.

The Britishers destroyed the historic monuments of India so that free Indians may not revive their feelings. And what their successors did was more harmful. They have hiden the historical facts from books. The result is the worst possible. I am obliged to see this painful findings of yours. I solute you Sir!
